Offered is a rare Frey's Chromatic Pitch Instrument manufactured by the Frey Mfg. Co. in 1925. This pitch pipe is embossed Frey Mfg. Co., Newark, NJ. This indicates that it is a rare early models made immediately following the 1925 patent approval; but prior to William Kratt splitting off from Frey to create the Wm. Kratt Co. and manufacturing was moved to Union, NJ.
The pitch pipe features a circular black plastic or bakelite body with white note markings and an A-440 tuning standard. The pitch pipe is in good vintage condition with light surface rust. Untested for tuning accuracy. Measures approximately 2 1/2" in diameter.
From my research:
The pitch pipe is a first-edition, late 1925 model. It represents the brief few months when William Kratt’s design was freshly patented, manufactured in the Frey Mfg. Co. Newark workshop, and assembled using the original, short-lived center-screw blueprint. Because most musicians threw these away when they wore out or lost the tiny center screws, finding a completely intact 1925 center-screw prototype with the internal Frey stamping is a massive win for a vintage music collector.
